Shelf Stable Saturday and Making the most of Ramen noodles

Happy 2021! I know every one of us is looking forward to leaving 2020 and are hoping for a better year! Some people in my circle are kind of cynical about that, but I am choosing to think it is going to get better from here.

This week's shelf stable feature is Ramen noodles. There is a lot of sodium in a ramen noodle seasoning packet, but you can't beat the price. By adding other foods to your ramen, you increase the amount of servings and spread the sodium out over more helpings. The easiest thing to add to your ramen is canned vegetables, but here are some more shelf stable ideas to give you some variety while eating one of the world's cheapest foods. In another post we'll talk about ramen and fresh ingredients.

To your ramen you can add these shelf stable ingredients:

  • Canned chili (leave out the seasoning packet) or other canned soup
  • Spam and pineapple tidbits for a Hawaiian flare
  • Spam and anything really
  • Canned mushrooms diced small and canned chicken
  • Egg Drop Ramen- crack an egg into the boiling water and stir vigorously
  • Thai inspired- peanut butter, chili flakes, and soy sauce
  • Tuna  (or canned chicken or shrimp or crab) and peas or other canned vegetable
  • Greens and white beans
What do you like to add to your ramen? Have a good weekend!
