We were able to pick up a farmers to families box this week! They have been giving them out every two weeks, but it is not a sure thing that I will get one so I try to make a menu plan that will work without it the first week, then use it to bolster the plan. Then I use what is leftover from the box in the second weeks menu plan. It has been helpful both to help us save money on groceries, and sometimes I can just put something back in the pantry and substitute from the box, building up a little stockpile. This program is a federal program with no income requirement and they don’t even ask your name! It is so worth it to check if they have a drop point in your area.
Food box contained:
Gallon of milk
2 bottles of kefir (We didn't like the taste, but you can use it in place of buttermilk)
1 lb of mozzarella cheese
3 lb bag of apples
3 lb bag of potatoes
2 large onions
1 package of hot dogs
4 lb bag of precooked chicken patties
Here are the changes I made to this week's menu plan. I am afraid to count on the box, so just keep planning like I won't get one and then adjust the plan if we do!
Saturday-
- Breakfast- pancakes made with the kefir, 1/2 pound of sausage made into patties, fruit salad (canned fruit cocktail, chopped apples, canned pineapple)
- Lunch- Chicken sandwiches, microwave baked potatoes, apples- all from the box
- Dinner- Cabbage with Chicken (I use a bag of coleslaw mix to make it easier), whatever fruit we have left over, buttery rice, sweet potatoes
Sunday-
- Breakfast- Frittata, fried potatoes and onions
- Lunch- grilled cheese sandwiches, pasta salad
- Dinner- hot dogs and scalloped potatoes made with box ingredients, whatever fruit and veg we have left
