Shelf Stable Sunday And A New Online Cookbook I Found

I know it is supposed to be Shelf Stable Saturday, but, well, here we are haha!  I ran across a shelf stable cookbook from the website Food Storage Made Easy Some of the recipes don't work for me, they call for things I don't usually have like dehydrated green peppers, but other recipes are perfect for trying to use food pantry items or to make emergency meals. I picked a couple from the book to share here, and the link is above. I also want to spend more time on her website, it seems like it might be helpful! It is very full of information so will have to sift through it and share what I find.

Here are a few dinner ideas I ran across I want to try for next week.

Fry Bread With Chili

1 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of shortening
1/2 tablespoon of baking powder
3/4 cup of water

1 15 ounce can of chili
  1. Mix together flour, salt, shortening, baking powder and most of the water together and knead. Add more water if dough feels too dry and won't stick together.
  2.  Let dough rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile warm chili
  3. Pinch of pieces of dough, flatten into disks
  4. Fry in hot oil or melted shortening til puffed and the golden
  5. Top with warmed chili
I have made fry bread before and it is easier the second time, so if you are intimidated by it, don't give up!

Dirty Rice

2 cups of cooked rice
1 can of black beans, drained
1 can of corn, drained
1 can of diced tomatoes
1 15 ounce cans of tomato or spaghetti sauce
Dash or two of hot sauce

Combine all ingredients and heat, that's it! You can heat it in the microwave, on the stove or in the oven, whatever works for you. You can also change the corn to green beans, peas, mixed vegetables or whatever other canned vegetable you like, it's super flexible

Beans and rice make a complete protein to keep you filled up for the day.
