Happy Weekend! Continuing with the idea of making a Thanksgiving meal, here is one way we can have the flavors of Thanksgiving while only eating shelf stable foods. I can think of a few scenarios that might call for a Thanksgiving that contains only shelf stable foods. Maybe we decide to go camping over the long weekend, or maybe money has been super tight and we have been buying the makings for dinner a little at a time. Maybe we are working with items from the food pantry or gifts from friends or family. Whatever the case may be, a Thanksgiving meal is totally possible!
For me, that tastiest way to get that Thanksgiving feeling would be to make a mashed potato bowl. In years past a mashed potato bowl was my favorite way to use up Thanksgiving leftovers, but in this case we are skipping right to that step. Layering instant mashed potatoes made with canned milk, boxed stuffing, canned chicken, canned corn or green beans if you like and topped with jarred gravy is a very filling, taste filled dish. A side of cranberry sauce would be great too.
An alternative to a poultry based meal could be a ham dinner. Ham is a common holiday food and canned ham would work really well in this situation. Sides could include baked beans, boxed scalloped potatoes, canned vegetables like peas, green beans or asparagus, saurkraut and of course cranberry sauce.
Hope this week brings a smile to your face!
