This week at Kroger, they had spiral sliced hams for $0.97/lb if you spent $25 in groceries. Meat for less than a dollar a pound? Yes please. Plus, ham has so much flavor it is great for stretching meals as you can use less meat, kind of like bacon! That fits right into my budget, a little meat that packs a lot of flavor and goes a long way. Plus, the bone can make a batch of bean soup, giving it meaty taste without having to add meat (Except what falls off the bone). If you have never had to cut up a spiral sliced ham before, it can be intimidating. Spiral sliced means that they have sliced the meat around the bone in a spiral shape, but it will still all be attached to the bone. The tricky part for us is to get it away from that bone. Here is a 30 second video showing how to cut the most meat away from the bone. How to Cut a Spiral Sliced Ham, but there are many others out there. Now all that is left to do is package and freeze. Easy Peasy! I felt kind of silly avoiding taking advantage of this meat deal for so many years when I finally just broke down and did it. This idea will provide flavorful meat that will definitely stretch the budget or SNAP benefits.
I hope you try it out! If you do, let me know how it goes, thanks!
