A few weeks ago we were able to volunteer at a Farmers to Families food drop and bring home a box for ourselves. We offered to volunteer this week as they are trying to do it every two weeks, but they were full up with volunteers, which is great! She told me to come by anyway and get a box, so we did. The Farmers to Families program is super easy in our area. You just pull up on drop day, tell them how many in your family and what your zipcode is, that's it! There is no income question, no proof of residence, nothing, you just drive up and get a box. It is easy peasy! It only started recently here, and although they have had three scheduled, this is only the second one to happen because of weather. It think it is supposed to run until the end of April.
The Farmers to Families food program is federally funded by the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program that got started last April, and is currently in its fifth round of funding. If you are lucky enough to have a distribution in your area, do take advantage of it.
The box contained:
- 1 lb of cheese
- 1 gallon of milk
- 1 package of hot dogs
- 1 big carton of yogurt
- 1 4 lb bag of precooked chicken meatballs
- 1 5 lb bag of potatoes
- 3 oranges
- 2 large onions
This is going to allow a couple of more meat dishes for the next two weeks and allow me to add a couple of meals to the weekends. Instead of my original plan here is our new weekend plan. I'll also add some of the chicken meatballs to our spaghetti meal on Thursday.
Saturday-
- Breakfast- Yogurt, apple slices
- Lunch- Chili Mac, Peas, fruit cocktail
- Dinner- Broccoli and cheese baked potatoes, butter beans, rolls
Sunday-
- Breakfast- Frittata, sliced oranges
- Lunch- Hotdogs, fried potatoes, whatever fruit or veg we have left
- Dinner- Dried Navy Bean soup, corn bread
