Monday Meal Planning and some observations

The weather is finally beautiful here, and we are getting some outside time. Being outside in the sun is so therapeutic when it isn't hot. I am not a hot weather person, spring and fall are my favorite seasons, but I do love to soak up a little sun and vitamin D. Hopefully you get a chance to catch some rays this week.

After having done a few posts about food deserts and places to use food stamps besides grocery stores, I find myself paying more attention when I go into places. We stopped at a Speedway gas station today that advertised they accepted food stamps. I had never been inside this station before so was curious to see what could be had with food stamps. The answer? Not much. There were plenty of chips and pop, but no grocery staples. There was a wall of drink coolers and a couple of aisles full of bags of snack foods and jerky. In one corner as an after thought was wedged a little, shelved reach in cooler.

The little cooler held bottled smoothies in the bottom, some refrigerated lunchmeat, packages of pickles and boiled eggs, and boxed peanut better and jelly sandwiches. Quite a disappointing array. There was no frozen food at all, no canned food, no staples, but I guess if you were traveling and had to stop and get a bite, you could get your kids a sandwich, some pickles and a drink. I can't imagine this being a place someone would have to depend on. Maybe it's location on a busy street surrounded by other businesses accounts for this, but none of the businesses it is surrounded by are stores that sell food except restaurants. I don't know.

This week, the only meat our store circular had on sale was, get this, Hot Dogs for $1.39 a package, Bacon for $5.99 a one pound package, Boneless Beef Strip Steak for $6.99 a pound and have to buy a "value pack" to get that price and Lobster Tails 2 for $12! Given these parameters, I decided to buy the hot dogs (they were a "nice" brand) limit 5, one package of chicken legs at the outrageous price of $1.99 a pound and a package of breakfast sausage links for $2.47.
